Barack Obama as President - Buy Guns on Credit?

March 6th, 2008 · 6 Comments

Let’s continue with the post I wrote two days ago on Obama and gun control, shall we? I guess, since I’m writing this, you don’t actually have a choice . . . so I’ll answer for you. “Yes, Ranger Man, we shall continue.” Well then, if you insist.

“Wolf Sheep-clothed” provided a great link in the comments section. Here it is now: www.sportsmenforobama.org. Someone deviously registered the domain name and made a site criticizing Obama’s stance on gun control. What really caught my eye on the site was a link to a Huffington Post piece here. It’s a fresh post from 2/16/08, and it’s a commentary on Obama’s statements regarding gun control after the Northern Illinois University shooting. If you just read the liberal slanted, heavily spun Huffington Post piece you’d come to the conclusion that Obama stated he wants California gun laws to serve as a model for the rest of the country. That’s the spin, though. Looking more closely at his ACTUAL statement, he was speaking specifically to microstamping ammunition as something he believes gun control advocates and 2nd amendement rights advocates can agree on. The Huffington Post piece then suggest Obama NOT look to California for an example, but instead to Washington D.C.   :-S

All of this leads me to the point of today’s post. We all know the U.S. economy is getting flushed down the toilet, and we all know that one of your biggest financial priorities should be stocking up on food supplies and reducing debt, but - if you’re think a gun ban on certain types of firearms is imminent, and you want one of these pieces - is it wise to swipe the Visa or Mastercard and buy one now - on CREDIT!? This is, of course, a personal decision, but let me provide some random observations and food for thought in case the idea has crossed your mind.

1) Credit cards embody everything that is evil in the financial world. They hit you with an obscene interest rate, smack you with heavy late fees if you’re 2 minutes past due, and help fuel the consumerism that has alienated the masses from appreciation of the simple life.

2) If a ban WAS to come, pre-ban firearms would virtually double in value almost overnight after the ban hit. More so than during the 1994 ban, because there was a big loophole in that bill that allowed the banned guns to continue being sold with minor modifications. That loophole would almost certainly get corrected this time around.

3) If you’re holding out to see whether or not a ban is likely, will you be able to buy what you want before it’s enacted? I suspect shelves would quickly clear. Everyone would have backlogged orders. A number of years ago, soon after the California ban hit, I was at the range talking to a guy that just got laid off from Bushmaster (remember, I live in Maine). He said he was hired on only BECAUSE of the California ban. Bushmaster couldn’t keep up with the orders and they had people churning stuff out as fast as they could, shipping to California. That’s just California - imagine if there was a nation-wide ban!? You might be able to secure something last minute . . . “might”.

4) If a ban did hit, could your purchase be viewed as an “investment”? I suspect so, but only if you’re planning to SELL after the ban. Otherwise your “investment” is never realized and you’re just using the argument to push yourself toward a purchase. Personally, if I was looking at it from an investment perspective, I’d bulk up on high capacity magazines and plan to sell those after the ban. Your return on magazines would be greater over a shorter period of time.

Make your own choices, but choose wisely. Credit cards suck, and so do missed opportunities.

I blame easy credit on the high cost of living - people can space out payment for their vehicles and homes over many years - which means they feel they can pay more for them. This has served to jack up the prices.

Credit sounds good in theory, but it is a fools game. Unless, of course, you are a credit company.
