I like the list of arms here. Ive shot at least half of them. A .22 is a much needed firearm here though. It is ideal for any small game or birds in a pinch. a 12 Guage is probably in every ones closet but a 20 guage probably is not. Remington makes a 20 Guage 870 designed for defense. You can get an extended tube, side saddle carrier, light mount, etc as well. I picked it up for the Mrs. and I shoot it more than she does. Stopping power? Its got plenty with 00 buck and you can get slugs for it too. Recoil? Not much. Its VERY manageable, enough so that a girl of 10 years old is able to accuratly shoot it.

Another rifle that I am fond of is a Mossin Naggant (M-44) made in Yugo or Russia in 7.62X54R caliber. They have a built in bayonet with the original stock. There are plenty of aftermarket parts to customize them with. The best part is they are around $100.00 or less in brand new condition. They have been in storage since WWII but they are a fine rifle for the money. The ammo is not so cheap but can be easily found. They make a great survival rifle: High Powered, Accurate and Cheap!

I agree on the .22 is very much needed in any armory, and I agree on the AKs and the SKS (both tough and a bag of hammers). I would also like to say 7.62x54R cheap /and a good caliber should be added. Now on the .308 i do not agree your .223 or 5.56 is light because you need more then one round so now compare your per-round cost at 2 and 3 compared to the 1 round of the .308 except in practice your paying less for the .308. What I have in my main armory 1-SAR-8 .308/1 AK/ 1 SKS / 1 Mossberg 12g/1 coachman 12g/1 Ruger 9mms in /.50 semi sniper rifle. In the back up armory and rest of family’s/ 1 25-06 Remington BDL 700 (absolute tack driver)/ 1 30-06 Remington BDL 700 /1 308 Remington BDL 700 / 1 .308 Winchester mdl 99/ 2 20g Remington 1100s/ 1 Winchester 12g / 2 Ruger mini -14 ranchers/5 SKS/ 2 bull-pup AK / 4 .22 rifles/ and 2 4-10 Winchesters / 2 9mm Ruger, 3 357 mags misc ,1 thunder 5, 2 .22 calicos, / 5 MossinsAt (63.00 each way not) / 1 M1 30-06/ and 2 30-30 Winchesters .The last thing I just received a real winner for my birthday the 500 SW mag ( o- boy i was just thrilled). Anyone want to buy one by the way, any way i have such a verity because I have kids (4) 2 girls and (2) boys ages from 8 months to 17 and then there’s the wife. So matter what i have something for everyone, but the one thing that i have is everything is as tough a stack of hammers. Because unless you have the US Army supplying your retreat and or one of you are a gunsmith that is very important. Also you can see that I also covered all of the most popular calibers as far as ammo I have a good supply for each. The next thing you are going to say is way go with the 9MM well I fell that the side arm is the last line of defense so I what high cap, also it is a deadly caliber but your 5 year hold can handle it.
