Connie Rodd, PS Magazine and Now “Betty the Survival Babe”

February 14th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Hell-oooooo everyone! Betty the Survival Babe here. This is my first post since coming on as an assistant at SHTFblog. It’s no coincidence that it’s on Valentine’s Day! *wink*

Some of you may remember me as Connie Rodd. I first appeared in the pages of Army Motors when the Ordnance Department hired me on. Will Eisner was my original artist. In Army Motors I was a mechanic and hosted a column called Connie’s Briefs (”briefs” ;-)). Why “Connie Rod”? Because it sounds like “connecting rod” . . . like in an engine, sweetie. This was during World War II. After the war we went to PS Magazine (Preventative Services Monthly). With the help of Sgt Half-Mast McCannick we taught olive drab boys a thing or two about trucks, tanks, small arms, jeeps, rockets - you name it! See:

The magazines were created for one purpose - speed of information. Technical manuals took too long to produce, and if you needed fresh information in the field fast - nothing better than a monthly magazine (featuring me ;-)). Since all of the drawings are in the public domain, Ranger Man pulled me out, gave me some 21st century lovin’, and brought me on board.

I’ve always adapted with the times. Here I am in Vietnam during the 60’s:

A girlfriend joined the pages during the 70’s:

The politically correct people at the Pentagon eventually decided I was too risque. They thought I might offend the ladies when I zipped my blouse down low, bent over and showed skin, or kissed boys. Wimps. Most of the ladies I hang out with like it ;-). But that’s neither here nor there.

I’ll see you all again real soon.

I see that her partner Bonnie has made her entrance. Joined the crew in the 70’s due to PC issues. They also had a young trooper to appeal to the ladies! Cannot remember his name.
