Those of us in New England are bracing for another round of snow today. We’ve been dumped on so far this winter, but the past few days have been really mild, almost spring like. Aaaah, the see-saw of weather. The mild weather break was nice on the oil consuming boiler, to clear some snow, and to get outside in the sun.

Where was I? Oh yes . . . . weather. I know some of you diehard Republican / Libertarian thinkers that proclaim anything remotely liberal is WRONG don’t buy the whole “global warming is happening” Al Gore chatter, but your ranks grow thinner and thinner each year as the weather gets more funky and more clear signs emerge. In fact, it’s become quite obvious if you just pay attention. Take a trip up north - waay up north - and scope the permafrost. It’s happening. If you’re into mountaineering, go climb Kilimanjaro before the glacier is completely gone.

Global Warming will dramatically shift our way of life in the coming decades. Survival, and quality of life, may depend largely on where you live. Ironically, according to a report widely published and found on www.brookings.edu, there will also be “winners” in the warming - in terms of money and power. Your location on this planet, and how global warming affects it, may well determine the value it carries. “If the global climate continues changing, many people and nations will find themselves in possession of land and resources of rising value, while others will suffer dire losses—and these winners and losers could start appearing faster than you might imagine” source here.

The closer to the equator you get the less value the land could hold. The United States, Canada, Greenland, Russia, and Scandinavia would likely have the most to “gain” from global warming. Take Russia for example:

For generations poets have bemoaned this realm as cursed by enormous, foreboding, harsh Siberia. What if the region in question were instead enormous, temperate, inviting Siberia? Climate change could place Russia in possession of the largest new region of pristine, exploitable land since the sailing ships of Europe first spied the shores of what would be called North America. The snows of Siberia cover soils that have never been depleted by controlled agriculture. What’s more, beneath Siberia’s snow may lie geologic formations that hold vast deposits of fossil fuels, as well as mineral resources.

Should it turn out that headlong fossil-fuel combustion by northern nations has set in motion climate change that strengthens the relative world position of those same nations, future essayists will have a field day. But the prospect is serious. By the middle of the 21st century, a new global balance of power may emerge in which Russia and America are once again the world’s paired superpowers—only this time during a Warming War instead of a Cold War.

Shifts in the relative values of places and resources have often led to war, and it is all too imaginable that climate change will cause nations to envy each other’s territory. This envy is likely to run both north-south and up-down.

Many people from third world countries will become even more desperate to immigrate to the United States or some other country. It’s strange that the United States, responsible for so much of the global air pollution, could be forced to turn away the droves of people seeking safety and security, because their homeland’s weather is so screwed. Even within the U.S., Florida may not be the retirement destination it is now if sea levels rise and summer really sizzles. The Golden Horde will head north, to Washington state, Canada, New England . . . . . . . . . . Maine . . . . . . . .
