Survival Fitness and Preparation

September 14th, 2009 · 8 Comments

I think that staying fit is something that we gloss over too often… It’s easy to talk about what kind of gear to get, or what your favorite rod is, but keeping your heart and lungs healthy will go a long way towards survival. That being said, there are some pretty pricey “get fit quick” solutions out there- everything from crazy, joint-busting crash courses, to bizarre non-FDA-approved powders and supplements that can be pretty bad for you long-term… and we’re all about long term.

There are so many different videos and programs out there, but I think that the best information I’ve seen in awhile is available for FREE on the Crossfit site- www.Crossfit.com. The Crossfit site offers up a wealth of knowledge on how to get and stay fit, as well as how to eat (my biggest weakness). The only things that you’ll need for the majority of their exercises are your own body weight, and some basics like a pull up bar, maybe some old tractor tires, and other barnyard leftovers that make for an interesting training regimen… The key to Crossfit is just that- “keep it interesting” - change up your workouts, try new things, and don’t let yourself get bored.

That said, you don’t have to get crazy- but have a look at the forthcoming film about Crossfit, it’s pretty cool…

On a personal note, our condolences go out to JWR at Survivalblog.com.

So, basically, The program is about using things around you, instead of going out and spending all sorts of money (thousands) on electronic based equipment. GREAT IDEA! I’m sure many of us who check out this blog are all for re-purposing items and saving thousands of dollars. Besides, those tractor tires, logs and rocks make great cover when the S actually HTF, AND they would also be good locators for any cahes of goods you might have, as in: “Ayuh! I got a case worth of MRE’s and a pistol with a nundred rounds of ammo 3 yards east of the base of the birch log leanin’ against the two old John Deer tires.”

Good post - and very true. I know alot of guys who have alot of equipment but are too out of shape to hump it even a couple of miles.

Just following a good military based fitness program is all you need. The military fitness is designed to not need any additional outside equipment other than the soliders body.

along with exercise, it is a good idea to keep your vaccinations up to date. i know there’s some controversy about vaccinations, but i’d rather be somewhat protected from Hepatitis and others if i were in a natural disaster (particularly a flood).

Honestly I have probably taken this up as my pet cause. People don’t like it much because the truth is painful and harsh.

I did crossfit for awhile and no longer do it. Some elements are good and a lot of the principles are sound but for a reasonably in shape person I have found that all crossfit makes you better at is crossfit. For whatever reason though (and perhaps because) it is very broadly based some see at best marginal improvements in quantifiable measurements. This might start a flame war but my experience is that crossfit is a good way to make you very mediocre at a lot of stuff and progress is at best very slow.

Very overlooked prep, your right. Also the food combinations you eat are also important. Fitness is 80% diet, 20% excercise. Remember these basic combinations, try not to mix protein with carbohydrates (meat and potatoes) don’t mix fruit and vegetables, don’t mix fruit and meat and watch your portion control. You don’t need a fad diet and lots of expensive workout equipment. If you do pump the weights, keep them light and work slow and deliberate, practicing good form. You’ll get just as much benefit from that as you will pumping your max weight all the time.
