Bird Flu Action in Pakistan

WHO is in Pakistan.
I don’t know, you tell me.
I AM telling you, WHO is in Pakistan.
And I told you, I don’t know who is in Pakistan!

The World Health Organization (WHO) has dispatched health experts to Pakistan to investigate the cause of South Asia’s first outbreak of bird flu, and particularly, to determine whether it’s gone human-to-human. Two infected brothers – dead. Others – infected.

A team of WHO experts have been sent to Pakistan to help determine the cause. All four brothers were believed to have worked on a farm and poultry outbreaks had earlier been reported in the area. But one brother, Mohammed Tariq, said only one sibling worked on the farm.

WHO has not ruled out limited human-to-human transmission.

“We can’t answer that yet. It’s possible.”

“I was not aware that this was such a dangerous disease,” said Ishtiaq, a veterinary doctor who works for a government-funded livestock program. He said he wore no protective clothing.

These news reports keep coming up. Am I the only one that thinks it’s just a matter of time before this, or some other nasty virus, jumps human-to-human? History would tell use we’re past due for a global pandemic.

Ron Paul’s Got Cash
I know a number of SHTFblog readers are Ron Paul fans. If you don’t already know, you’ll be happy to learn that “Dr. No” raised a whopping $6 million on Sunday, which could be the largest single-day fundraising total in U.S. history.

District of Columbia Gun Buyback Program
When I look at the map overlay of who is visiting this site I see one person from the District of Columbia reading regularly. To that person – need spare cash? D.C. just bought guns (again) from citizens: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2007/12/16/nurenberg.gun.amnesty.cnn

A number of years ago Portland, Maine conducted a gun buyback program where they gave everyone $50 bucks per gun. One of the guns turned in was a highly collectible, very valuable .44 magnum. I wonder if that one went to the bottom of the ocean . . . got scuba gear?

I Am Legend
Will “Survival Master” Smith (or who plays that role on the big screen) and his homies at Warner Brothers must be thoroughly pumped. I Am Legend marked the best box-office opening in December when it debuted with $76.5 million.

Got Garden? Global Food Supplies Rapidly Dwindling

In an “unforeseen and unprecedented” shift, the world food supply is dwindling rapidly and food prices are soaring to historic levels, the top food and agriculture official of the United Nations warned Monday.

Prices of wheat and oil are at record highs, Diouf said Monday. Wheat prices have risen by $130 per ton, or 52 percent, since a year ago. U.S. wheat futures broke $10 a bushel for the first time Monday, the agricultural equivalent of $100 a barrel oil.

Diouf blamed a confluence of recent supply and demand factors for the crisis, and he predicted that those factors were here to stay. On the supply side, these include the early effects of global warming, which has decreased crop yields in some crucial places, and a shift away from farming for human consumption toward crops for biofuels and cattle feed. Demand for grain is increasing with the world population, and more is diverted to feed cattle as the population of upwardly mobile meat-eaters grows.

“We’re concerned that we are facing the perfect storm for the world’s hungry,” said Josette Sheeran, executive director of the World Food Program, in a telephone interview. She said that her agency’s food procurement costs had gone up 50 percent in the past 5 years and that some poor people are being “priced out of the food market.”

Reading this Blog from Iran?
Of course not. Ahmadinejad is cracking the whip on internet access again, most recently closing 24 internet cafes so there’s less “immoral behavior”. Source: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071216/wr_nm/iran_crackdown_internet_dc

Russian Nuke Juice Goes to Iran
{insert sarcastic tone here}
Freedom loving Vladamir Putin and his Russian homies have begun delivering fuel to an atomic power station in Iran. No worries. Iran has provided “written guarantees” that it’ll send the spent fuel back to Russia for “utilization and storage”.

Iran is Building ANOTHER Nuke Juice Plant

What’s better than one nuke juice plant? Two. This country just won’t quit.

Lastly on Iran
I actually gotta toss a “thank you” to Ahmadinejad for supplying me with endless post material.

Iran’s president said on Sunday the publication of a U.S. intelligence report saying Iran had halted a nuclear weapons program in 2003 amounted to a “declaration of surrender” by Washington in its row with Tehran.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also dismissed in an interview with state television the prospect of new U.N. sanctions against Iran over its refusal to halt sensitive atomic work.
