Snow Plowing, Shoveling, Cold Weather and Heart Attacks

January 25th, 2008 · 6 Comments

Here is a story. Those of you that follow national weather news will know that the Northeast has been slammed with a lot of snow. It’s like the good old days. Sort of.

Winter Safety!

Play it safe, SHTF homies. All the while you’re stockpiling ammo and c-rations, less obvious threats are near. Take my plow man for example. He got his truck stuck in my yard. Check it:

I’m sure the first thing you’re wondering is, “what is he doing plowing your yard?” Well, I live in Maine, that’s what we do.

Plow dude spent a solid 2-3 hours screwing with his truck, trying to get it out, shoveling, etc. I gave him a hand when I got home, but it was too late. He needed help. Help came (note butt crack).

Plow dude gets his truck out, and goes back to plowing his driveways, very, very late.

Next storm comes and plow dude tells me he ended up heading to the hospital that night. Cold air, out of shape, over-exertion, and heart attack. He was in the hospital for a few days. Shit hit the fan for poor plow dude.

Play it cool in cold weather my out-of-shape SHTF homies. You can go to great lengths building extensive gardens and buying grain mills, but if you’re not smart about your day-to-day actions you’ll never live to see TEOTWAWKI, let alone survive it.

Needless to say plow dude doesn’t plow my yard anymore.

we had 6 to 8 inches of heavy heavy wet snow in late November and like an idiot I shoveled our walks and attempted to do my 5000 squ ft driveway with my JD 522 snow blower . After about an hour of wrestling with it and nearly dropping over from exhaustion, I called my ex-plowguy. He is now my plowguy again for this winter. Since I am an Oldman and overwieght and out of shape I still have not recovered fully from the over exersion 60 days ago. I don’t smoke anymore thnakfully., but RangerMan is correct, take it easy out there Dudes and Dudettes,, live to fight another day….

    Be in shape before SHTF.

    No excuses.

    Good point RM.

Being in shape is the most important single preparadness issue. One doesn’t need to be able to run 30 miles in a day or bench press 300 pounds but having good general healthy and the ability to do the following tasks (maybe you can think of one to add): do daily 19th cen chores, walk all day at a moderate pace with a moderate (40-50lb) load, sprint for short periods, and be able to drag a normal sized SHTF hommie behind cover or carry them out a couple hundred yards. I think if you can complete these tasks you are in SHTF shape. This physical conditioning is far more important then your garden or the rifle you choose to carry.

I’m still confused. Why would you plow your lawn?

Benton - It’s a Maine thing; the moose come to your yard to find the (now more or less) uncovered grass, and while they are eating, you bust a cap in their ass. You don’t have so far to drag the body either.

This is very true. Shoveling snow is hard work and can be exhausting. I own a snow removal service in St. Louis and I always see people outside shoveling thier driveway, when they should not be. Thanks for the post.
