Super Tiny Homes to Escape the Mortgage Rat Race in a Down Economy

by Ranger Man on October 26, 2008

Economy got you down? Tired of debt? Looking for financial freedom? If you don’t have a family, perhaps a super tiny home is what you’re looking for. Check the vid:

$15,000-$45,000 though? That sounds kinda high to me. You can get a used camper much cheaper than that. I’d think a small plot of land with a used camper would be a better route to go, but hey – whatever.

BTW: Yep, my posts are getting a bit shorter, and aren’t daily – a reflection of this busy time of year for me. Deer season starts in just a few days, and home life is busy. Thanks to the person that bought a few grid down field manuals the other day. *thumbs up*

Also: gun sales up in uncertain times.

I had read this on the CNN website a couple days ago. If I remember correctly, they had something similar on their cable channel a few months ago. Anyway, I agree 15k is a bit costly for this little cabin. I’d figure you could build something a bit larger yourself for that price, and make it mobile. That would include buying the utility trailer at a local building supply center. I’m thinking those flat trailers you might see at Lowes. BTW Rayovac batteries for a low price at Target lately. 2-packs of C,D, and 9V, or 4-packs of AA, or AAA for a buck a pack. I picked some up for the Mag-lite. Couldn’t justify to the wife much more than that. Small battles…

15K would be a pretty nice RV/ 5th wheel and at least an acre of land.

its a tumble weed tiny house, been looking at these things for years. they are cheap and come in a ton of variates. not all go on wheels, most are meant to be fixed normal houses.

In which B.H.O. basically says that the Warren Court did not go far enough in REDISTRIBUTING WEALTH, that this was a failure of the civil rights movement, and that this COULD BE accomplished legislatively.

Simply unbelievable.

It is very hard to reverse certain “sea changes”, you all.

I love teeny houses, but those are way too pricey. An RV and some land for me!

Another good (cheap) but much larger (and stationary) option for those that have brought an acre or so of land is a shed, with some insulation and a window or 2.

$15k to start? That is a bit high I think someone can buy a new fully self contained trailer somewhere in the 25 foot range for that. That is with no slideouts of course. And most trailers are considered second homes and the interest can be tax deductable. Lake lots for a few hundred. Works for me.

$15,000 for a yard shed??? Theres about $2500 in materials there. There is a book on how to build a log home for $3000 plus the cost of the book for $25. the link is http://www.amazon.com/How-Build-This-Log-Cabin/dp/0897459806 but make sure RM gets the proceeds and go through this site to amazon!! RM…RM…RMMMMM Put a link to this!

You can find cheap land at http://www.landandfarm.com to build it on or put a trailer on.

I really want one of those little houses, I live in a overpriced slum in a shity neighborhood.

Does seem a bit steep. You could pick up a 2nd-hand trailer for a few hundred to a few thous. $$$ And, maybe a class-c driveable one for a little more that that. However, where are you going to get the fuel for the vehicle to pull the house-trailer? I would think a nice little piece of isolated land or an abode really hidden amongst the trees and easy to defend would be the way to go. What do others think?

Personally, I think the whole home ownership this is vastly overrated, having lived in one and paid on it for the requisite 30 years. Now, I think that if I had every penny I’ve spent on maintenance, renovating, etc., etc., and had paid myself minimum wage all those years, I’d have quite a bit of $$$. This whole “Tiny House” house on a trailer is for the wealthy or for someone who can do their own work. 51 – 45 K? You’ve GOT TO BE KIDDING. You could get a very nice travel trailer and rig or a fairly nice Class-C for that much. The only thing I haven’t completely figured out is what brands/models would be livable 4-season. Bigfoot and Arctic Fox have nice models but they’re manufactured, respectively, in Oregon and Canada. I’d love to be free to pick up and go, but there’s the reality of cold weather. An alternative would be a small piece of land with small cabin, well, some solar to keep things going, wood stove, instantaneous hot water heater, etc. The cabin idea would work better if you’re married and/or have children, too, I guess…

What do you all think?
