Wyoming State Representative David Miller Introduces “Doomsday Bill”

by Ranger Man on February 28, 2012

A totally awesome SHTFblog reader (like you) wrote to me yesterday.

Hello there,

Just this news article and though I would go ahead and forward you the link. At least some of the Big Men have a notion that things may change.

Bright Day!

In case you couldn’t figure it out by reading the blog post title, the domain address of the news article, or the article itself, Representative Miller is – down with the doomsday! That’s “down” as is “yo, I’m down with dat. Down wit da doomsday.”

Let’s hear it for Representative David R Miller, Republican Legislator from Wyoming. He’s a prepper!

State of Wyoming Legislature photo

The Wyoming Tribune writes in this article:

If America’s economic and social problems continue to escalate and spiral out of control, Miller said, Wyoming needs to be ready. So, he’s introduced legislation to create a state-run government continuity task force, which would study and prepare Wyoming for potential catastrophes, from disruptions in food and energy supplies to a complete meltdown of the federal government.

It would even look at the feasibility of quickly providing an alternative currency in Wyoming should the U.S. dollar collapse entirely.

Wyoming’s Department of Homeland Security already has a statewide crisis management plan, but it doesn’t cover what the state should do in the event of an extreme nationwide political or economic collapse.

The task force would include state lawmakers, the director of the Wyoming Department of Homeland Security, the Wyoming attorney general and the Wyoming National Guard’s adjutant general, among others.

Miller said he didn’t anticipate any major crises hitting America anytime soon. But Wyoming, which has a comparatively good economy and sound state finances, needs to make sure it’s protected should any unexpected emergency hit the United States.

Is this bill totally awesome, or is it just awesome? Think it’ll pass?

Maybe I’ll work on a citizen referendum here in Maine. The “Doomsday Referendum.” It’d be a comprehensive doomsday referendum, a prepper public policy dream. It’d include:

  • SHTF prep tax deductions for things like food grade buckets, water barrels, food savers, etc.
  • gun rights language
  • a drive for more community gardens
  • “buy local” initiatives
  • prepper courses in Adult Eduction, “How to Can Food” and such

And …. what else could we get?

Very Cool !!!!!!!! I wonder if Gov. Brewer would go for that ? they forgot a secession alternative , after all , if it got that bad , why not just free yourself from the government altogether at that point as well .

Thank goodness one politician is willing to look at the very real possibility of energy problems. Do you think you could spare him for a few years? We in Australia could use him.

Watchdog February 29, 2012

Sorry mate, Canada gets him first. Besides we’re closer.;-)

Think he needs to take a tour of the states before hand…. to spread a bit of common sense! Sadly, it’s in short supply these days, everybody thinks that we can keep squeezing this world for all it’s worth and continue to get more & more out of it every year. Just doesn’t make sense to me!

Sadly the WY legislature tanked the ‘Doomsday Bill’ yesterday! It is out of consideration.

So proud to be an original Wyoming girl when I saw this last week. Thankfully, I still have family there and I’m only 6 hours away in Utah if things get really nasty.

Utah recently passed a money bill — can’t remember the exact language, but the governor signed a bill that each city could create its own currency…

In Florida they had “Hurricane Preparedness Weekend” for a few years where certain supplies, like flashlights, generators, and batteries were tax free. They have not had one of those for a while though.

Off-topic, but you need to know: When I opened the site via Chrome (on Linux), I got a warning that http://www.shtfblog.com was “reported as a phishing site”.

Just FYI… you may have some bad mojo on the site (that is, someone invaded it and injected bad scripts), or some dumbass may have reported it.

I figured out the specific bit that the filter is whining about:

Thanks a bunch, man. Working on it. Sigh.

Thought it was a phishing site …. silly me.

Perhaps reduced property taxes if you have a small general farm. Also, state law allowing chickens to be kept as long as you had a yard greater than 1000 sq ft. This should have a clause blocking more restrictive city ordnances.

We had phish here a few years ago. Talented musicians, but their hipie/ trust fund baby fans were some of the messiest people I’ve seen. Made US 1 look like the Mass. Pike with all the litter.

I like the tax dedustion for preps idea….
PRO’s
- Citizens who take advantage of it will be less likely to need assistance from state/federal organizations like FEMA, which means they can focus on folks who REALLY need help (patients at hospitals, retirement/nursing home residents, folks living in the hardest-hit areas… depending on the situation of course, etc.)
- Citizens who take advantage of the tax-break will probably be able to help others in their community such as family/friends, because they will be able to justify spending more on preps, making them more self-reliant in an emergency
- The combination of “Prepper Movement” (as I have heard it called on TV in the last few days), and a tax break for building supplies, would likely spur more folks to get into prepping. Which means industries that make outdoors/camping/backpacking gear, long-term storage food production, firearms, water purification systems, knife & tool manufacturers would likely all see a boost in demand for their products; which at this point (at least in my opinion) could only help the economy, just think of how many different industries are represented here in this small list…. Farmers, dairies, meat processers, chemical companies, clothing & textile manufacturing, steel, plastics… and thats just what I pulled off the top of my head. I think it has promise…

CONS
- Now the Feds know you are prepping, and if you are able to write off the land/work that is done to make a “hide”, then they know where you are prepped
- If you are required to give itemized, detailed reports of what you purchased… They know exactly what your packin’ and snackin’ on
- There will still be folks out there who were to narrow-minded, lazy, or just didn’t care to prep…. Leading to them trying to get to your preps by any means necessary

Of course thats just my perspective
