Have YOU visited an agricultural fair this year? You city slickers are probably like, “Agricultural fair? What are you, living in the sticks?” Kinda.
I’ve attended a variety of fairs across Maine over the years. Some are better than others, but all have a consistent line up of activities including, but not limited to: greasy yummy food, fair rides, harness racing, demolition derby, food/produce/quilt competitions, horse/tractor pulling and so on.
This past weekend I attended Maine’s Common Ground Fair. This fair is BY FAR the best suited for Maine preparedness minded people. Why? One big reason – it’s put on by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA). It’s a 3-day fair with NO amusement rides. It’s focused solely on sustainable living and organic gardening, so for the survival samurai looking for a little more self-reliance, wow – what a learning opportunity the Common Ground Fair presents. Check out some of the informational sessions they hosted and tell me this fair isn’t a self-reliance dream:
- Low Impact Forestry
- Easy Backyard Composting
- Small Scale On-Farm Seed Cleaning
- Blacksmithing Demos
- Root Cellar Design & Use
- Keeping a Family Cow
- Class: Fire by Friction
- How to Find Affordable Farmland
- Homestead Technology
- Can You Make Money with Goats
- Edible Landscaping
- Class: Shelter Building
- Backyard Poultry
The list goes on and on. Then on top of that you add all of the sustainable living exhibitors selling things like composting toilets, solar panels, wood boilers and home energy audits. The coolest item I saw was the hand water pumps made by Bison Pump right here in Maine. They make a pump that will work with an existing drilled well right alongside the electric pump. They’re a little pricey, but they’re beautiful – and well-built.
Now if all of this is sounding like a hippie love-fest …. well, you’re right! People walk around barefoot, wearing patchouli and desperately needing a haircut. But hey – many of these folks are far more ahead of the preparedness curve than the armchair survivalist stockpiling ammo.
