Even though the economy is going to Hell, food costs are going higher, people have reduced work hours, and everyone is nervous about job security – there’s a silver lining to the mayhem if you look hard enough to find it. Take the recent news article on Pinching pennies like your grandparents for example. The article, focused largely on the Hillbilly Housewife website, (congrats on your moment of internet fame Hillbilly H), talks about stretching your money to make meals for the family – old school style.
While not everyone is producing all the family’s food in the backyard, many are now cutting back on restaurant outings, opting to spend more time at home around the dinner table . . . dare I say – as a family. Besides, like you really needed to go through the nasty drive through 5 times a week. People feeling the pinch are learning to cook the basics again, learning to make a meal out of what seemed like nothing. Oh what a shame (sarcasm). Many people have lost this skill, and should times get tougher – more will have to learn. Time to appreciate once again – what it is you have.
There are benefits here for everyone, whether you’re a political right-wing wacko or a left-wing loser. Stay at home and have a family cooked meal. For the green eco-freaks it’s grassroots organic action. For the religious right-wing folks it’s quality family time. It’s a win for everyone – except the pesticide spraying mega-farms the limit our connection with our surroundings and the skills one needs to survive should Russia launch an EMP on our asses.
Besides all of this family feel good stuff, c’mon – you survival samurai (btw: I corrected my previous use of “samurais” as the plural of samurai. “Samurai” is both plural and singular – look at that learning in action!) have got to admit that when you see the stock market plunge and people get nervous there’s a certain . . . demented side to us all that forces a grin on the inside, and we think to our food stores and rub our hands feverishly – lol. You know, unless things get really lean. Then it just sucks. We’re never as ready as we want to be. I’m hoping for another nice multi-year economic turnaround that will allow me more time and money to make the preps I really want to make, but in the meantime it’s inch by inch, row by row.

BTW: Read this article on a mystery, very lethal virus in India. THIS, my SHTF homies, is how the end will begin . . .
More! Russia claims it’s “not afraid” of new cold war – news article. Crazy times, folks. McCain was quoted as saying something along the lines of “George Bush said he looked into Putin’s eyes and saw his soul. When I look in his eyes I see KGB.” And it couldn’t be further from the truth. Read Putin’s biography right here. Russia is on a path, rich with oil dollars, to reclaim their Soviet might. Be wary of the future, my friends. Prepping in the future – like the food article above – could be a lot like prepping in the past – fallout shelters!
