Despite the mainstream media’s lack of attention when the OWS protest first started they have been forced to report on it recently simply because of its size and the fact that it’s now spread across the country and overseas. Despite the fact that many reports I’ve read poke fun at the fact that the movement is not centrally organized with one central point, or points, it continues to grow in size and popularity. And despite what you read about the protest, by most accounts it’s a peaceful demonstration, at least in NYC. Check out this great post at The Burning Platform about a first hand visit to the city. The protestors aren’t just young hippies rebelling against the system, it’s a broad cross section of the population out there telling the corporate world that we’re tired of the kleptocracy that our nation is becoming.
I’ve got nothing against banks making a profit, but when they’re sucking the last of the money out of people who simply can’t afford it anymore to give themselves fat paychecks. The money they make on Wall Street is just crazy when you see the numbers:
Despite that, Goldman still allocated $10 billion in the first three quarters of 2011, to compensation expenses.
That works out to an average of about $292,000 for each of Goldman’s workers. A year ago, Goldman set aside approximately $13 billion for its staff. That amounted to more than $370,000 per Goldman employee.
I realize that this is an average number, but I’d be willing to bet that the lion’s share of people at GS won’t make $292,000 this year. I’d also be willing to bet that the CEO and other top executives are bringing home stupid money.
According to this story the poor guy (Lloyd Blankfein)won’t be making quite that much this year, but I still find it hard to feel sorry for him.
Lloyd Blankfein, the CEO of Goldman Sachs, saw his 2010 compensation rise to $14.1 million from just over $1 million in 2009, according to an Associated Press analysis of data filed with regulators on Friday.
Is it any wonder people are mad? The (official) unemployment rate is still around 9.1%, yet the people who caused the housing mess and subsequent market crash with their dubious financial instruments (CDOs and the like) are making money off the funds we used to bail them out with. People should be mad in my opinion.
Greed
But – the citizens of the United States and Europe aren’t without blame either.
The whole mess can be laid at the alter of greed. People wanted more things and the banks were happy to help them get their stuff – for a percentage of course. And the government was happy because the economy continued to grow because debt is the grease that makes everything go round and round. Big houses, big cars, big TV sets, tiny computers, smart phones, iPods, vacations, cruises, and so forth and so on, and all of it put on credit cards.
With this attitude it was inevitable.
I think the reason for the outrage is that big companies just did it better than everybody else and have made screwing the people out of their money a career that they happen to excel at.
Most preppers understand how valuable it is to live within your means and have taken steps to cut debt and get ahead on supplies that will help them stay above water when the trouble starts. I hope that if you aren’t out of debt that you’re working on it and I wish you success in your endeavor.
I’m sure some of you will agree with me and I’m also sure others will be saying, “Jarhead. Are you off your freakin’ tree?” Maybe, but I’ll let my brothers-in-arms speak for me.
Sound off in the comments. Let me know what you think.

Jarhead, true there is greed at the top, but all the well intentioned protesters are being used as “useful idiots” by the commies and others that want to take down the USA. Do you really want the anarchy they want to bring about or the totalitarian dictatorship they will bring about? Do you think for a minute that you would not be on the list for “re-education?”
sput, what the heck are you talking about? Totalitarian dictatorship?!?! These protestors are asking for bailouts of the mainstreet, accountability for those at the top with their greed and excesses. Nowhere is anyone asking for a removal of democracy! They are practicing their democracy for pete’s sake!
Re-education?! Again, I think you’re not following the the thread of the conversation. OWS protestors are opposed to the high rise of price for college education. No one has mentioned “re-education.”
Take a deep breath and relax, I promise, the commies are not out to get you.
No what they are asking for is hand outs and spread the wealth. That is Socialism! This is a Republic not a Democracy Jennie, you need to lean the difference. It sounds like you are a product of the “Re-education” public school system yourself.
“They are practicing their democracy for pete’s sake!”
Yep mob rule, democracy in its true form!
“OWS protestors are opposed to the high rise of price for college education.”
What does this have to do with wall street? Nothing!
The Democrates in DC are loving this because these protest are their roots where they come from and it divert attention from the real problem in this country. The wastful and overspending of Washington. So go protest in DC not wall street.
Now don’t no one break their ankles jumping to conclusions…
It’s actually a mixture of folks, from what I can tell. So far, I’ve figured the following major types of people. I do not confirm or deny any agreement with their viewpoints, but want to list them only:
Many of them (rightly or wrongly) have busted their humps their whole lives, and were silly enough to believe that their 401k’s wouldn’t evaporate. They were crazy enough to believe that insurance would be sufficient to cover any illnesses they got. They were even believing that they would have a job so as to continue paying their mortgages and such.
Others assume that if banks whose CEOs can rake in a zillion dollars in spite of getting massive government funding to avert bailouts can get a freebie, then why can’t they?
There are a surprising number of them who are disillusioned with the whole ‘hope and change’ bit, and want to express their frustration over believing wholeheartedly, what was essentially an empty campaign slogan.
Then we have folks who think the government should take care of them only (money-wise and otherwise), and that corporations should get nothing.
Then there are, as you say, folks too lazy to work for a living and looking for a handout.
—
Meanwhile, you have corporations trying their level best to ignore them, the politicians doing their absolute best to co-opt the mob in order to appear to be on their side (even Obama is busy doing this), and you have a country wondering what is going to come of it… at least until they’re all distracted and move on to the the next thing that the media waves in front of their faces.
“It’s actually a mixture of folks, from what I can tell.”
…and the unions, and the communists. Oh, and you forgot to mention the radical Islamists.
http://dailycaller.com/2011/10/23/islamic-group-joins-with-occupy-wall-street/
I don’t remember seeing any of them at a tea party rally.
This was a joke; this whole movement was an orchistrated boondoggle to try to take the steam out of the TParty. IT didnt work. They dont understand that the t party is real people with real problems and complaints. They are the people that work everyday and pay the taxes that support the govt as a whole. A bunch of ragged out doped out stupid commie hippies cant stop that. This is like lazy people protesting cuz working folks wont support them. what a joke. I had a picket line try to stop me from entering a job sight once, I just STEPPED ON THE GAS:) Some one need t do the same here
“A bunch of ragged out doped out stupid commie hippies cant stop that.”
What a gross misrepresentation. OWS protests are supported and participated in by many hardworking people, including as Jarhead pointed out, a sizable contingent of men and women of the armed services.
I don’t think I’ve heard a single OWS demand or reference to the Tparty. I think it’s great if you’re involved in the Tparty and actively engaging your government officials. Let me suggest though, that you put aside the ego trip for a moment and consider the possibility that the OWS protests have NOTHING to do with the Tparty. That doesn’t make the OWS complaints/problems any less real, just different from those being put forward by the TParty.
By hard working people you mean the Unions and Move On Dot org who are upset with not getting their fair share of hand outs. These people are what is wrong with this country. Everyone want the gov to take care of them instead of them going out and making their own way in life. The true 99% are out here working our butts off not setting in some protest.
“I don’t think I’ve heard a single OWS demand or reference to the Tparty.”

Honest to gawd, where do some of you people get your information?!? There is life outside of the CBS news with Walter Cronkite.
The disparity between the average worker and the ceo pay says it all. The average percent difference was much less 20 years ago than it is today (double digit as opposed to the higher triple digit percentages of today). Trickle down ecomonics doesn’t work as all the good imputs go to the top and all that trickles down is shit.
Wrong, You like the “Occupy” people have very simplistic view of, “they have it and I dont, this isnt fair”. And this idea that wall street is to blame is complete BS. Protest big government or the Fed. They are the cause for nearly all of our economic and social problems. This includes the housing crisis you refer to in the article. Banks do not give loans to people who cannot pay them back unless they are forced to. The two reasons we even have big banks are the Fed and big Government. Lastly, a great thing about this country is choice. If you dont like big banks then dont do business with them. Support your local banks, use cash, dont take out debt and above all take responsibility for yourself. No one deserves to have anything handed to them.
Signed,
Unemployed Smuck
Pray tell then, exactly WHAT are they trying to accomplish? What is their end game? Specifically please.
Oh, and as for trotting out the clip of your Brother in arms – This is a tool that is commonly deployed by leftist as some kind of trump card: Lets just cut to the chase and let those who have served have the final say in all of our political decisions. I would be comfortable with that.
“Lets just cut to the chase and let those who have served have the final say in all of our political decisions. I would be comfortable with that.”
Interestingly enough, so was Robert Heinlein, in the book Starship Troopers. It was a fascinating governmental structure… everyone had the same basic rights except one: you could only vote or run for office if you were a military veteran. Anyone could become a veteran, as the military wasn’t allowed to turn anyone down… but you had to work for it, for at least two years of service. Enlistment wasn’t required.
(forget the movie – it was a total perversion and BS-job).
I loved that book!
You can imagine my disappointment when I saw what Hollywood did to the movie.
Gee and I thought I was the only one who thinks the whole thing is a leftist scheme to pit class’s against each other and foment riots. I kinda think the presidents handlers are behind it all. The protesters are typical american spoiled brats who think those who actually produce wealth owe them something.
Don’t be fooled by the propaganda. The OWS was designed to provide cover for Obama and the democrats who have caused this problem. Wall street and the banks did not cause the recession/depression, government did with regulations and corruption. Most of those involved in OWS are clueless as to why they are there. Now we see more clearly the groups behind OWS pulling the strings and funding it, that should scare you more then someone on Wall street being paid more then you. I don’t care how much someone on Wall street makes or how much Oprah Winfrey or movie stars or athletes make. It does not take away a single penny from me or alter my opportunities in any way. Government on the other hand takes money from me and every taxpayer and reduces my income. I care how much government makes! That is who we should all be demonstrating against not some Wall Street employees. This is the great deception to take away the attention to the great depression.
Hell yeah! Bank of America can’t raise my taxes. If they jab me for using my debit card because of stupid gov mandates that force them too, I have the ability to take my business elsewhere. Corporations in and of themselves are NOT the problem because they do no have power over me. It is when they get in bed with the gov (who does have power over me) that the problems arise.
Than change banks!
Try that with the Government because you do not like the tax rate you are being charged and see what happens!
One of the problems with OWS is that the protestors do not or cannot make the connection between government and the mega banks and Wall Street. They think that goverment is the solution when it was government that enable Goldman, Bank of America etc to do what they did and are doing. The Fed, although private, was created by an Act of Congress. Goldman etc. are banks because the Federal regulators let them become banks to get bail out money. When it is inconvenient for Goldman to be a bank, the regulators will let them change back. Wall Street and the mega banks own congress and the president, whether republican or democrat, because of their campaign contributions and the movement of personnel back and forth between government posts and the boards of those corporations. OWS is delusional when it looks to the democrats to cure the problem just as the tea party was delusional when it looked to the republicans to solve the country’s problems. The republicans and the democrats divide the people and the game goes on.
Our politicians, on both sides of the aisle, are fully owned by corporate interests who fund their compaigns, their vacations, etc. It’s time to end that, to have total campaign finance reform. Without that, the laws will always favor the corporations that own Congress and the White House.
Whether OWS will be able to avoid the corporate co-opting that the Tea Party fell to – they are now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Koch Industries – is yet to be seen.
“Our politicians, on both sides of the aisle, are fully owned by corporate interests”
Yep!
Don’t know if any of you have noticed, but many of the Hollywood rich who have been promoting this – Roseanne Barr (50 million), Michael Moore (75 million), George Soros (? Millions) – have more wealth than those they are whining about… Roseanne Barr suggests that they be beheaded if they don’t “get it”… Its socialism vs conservatism. Do you ever see the Hollywood wealthy giving away money for nothing? Big business does (well, they get tax breaks for charitable giving), but the Hollywood / socialist wealthy don’t give away anything. All they do is take. This OWS is a war – a war for / of ideals. Will conservatism or socialism win out? If socialism wins, and the whole political struggle this year is to prevent socialism from taking over our society, then the end will be at hand, and you had better have your ammo and food resources close by, and should have already bugged out; otherwise you will be in a police state…
Honestly, I think it’s a big hissy fit.
There are no goals to speak of, at least not anything within the realm of reality. There is no spokesperson(s) to articulate the emotion into any form of logic.
Basically, you have a bunch of people who are angry about this or that, but have no clue or idea as to what to do about it, besides sit around and shout empty slogans. Reactions vary, from the 30 some-odd souls camping in Des Moines, IA, to the 5k (or so – it varies) camping in Portland, OR, to the far larger numbers camped in NYC.
I’m thinking that eventually, one of two things will happen to each and every protester: Either they’ll get disillusioned and go home (if they have one), or they’ll get angry and radical. I foresee some really angry mobs coming out of this one eventually, as the remaining protesters become more and more radicalized, and as criminal elements begin sneaking in to take advantage of the evolving situation.
Obama and co. can claim to be on their side and whatnot, but they’re the ones who will have to deal with the fallout (political or otherwise).
My missus went down to the Portland one on its first day to march along. She got a very good feel for the mood there. Completely peaceful (many folks brought their toddler-sized kids (!?)), but the majority of them (out of a roughly estimated 10,000 marchers) are definitely not Obama’s bestest buddies any more. Funny part is, this is in Multnomah County, the largest center of Obama-worship West of the Mississippi. Based on that? I think that come this time next year, Mr. Obama is going to be, barring a miracle, eyeball-deep in political kimchi.
The map hasn’t been updated for a few days, but my-o-my that’s a lot of protests.
http://motherjones.com/politics/2011/10/occupy-wall-street-protest-map
I think what’s going on is that people know there’s a bunch of stuff wrong in America and that it’s not getting addressed, but they don’t know what to do about it. When they saw people coming together to talk about it they decided to join in too.
I don’t think the OWS’ers will have much direct effect on anything and will slowly fade out, but they will have a big effect in the long run. They’re showing that people are concerned and can come together to workout problems. Many of those who showed up for the protests will continue to work on things when the protests have ended. They’re also indirectly showing that if they decided to pick up bricks and petrol bombs there’s enough of them that those at the top would be in a world of hurt. I don’t think they want it to come to that and they’re not saying it directly, but you can’t look at that many protests and not come to that conclusion. History’s shown that if you don’t fix the problems in your society with the rule of law it will eventually get fixed with the rule of force. I think a lot of folks at the top are getting a bit of a wake up call.
Markets and banks are human creations and the humans that created them have over the last thirty years have lobbied for rule changes that allowed a small percentage of people to take over more and more control of the government, markets, and wealth. At this point our whole food system is a virtual monopoly controlled by a handful of corporations. Does anyone really think that’s a good thing? Does anyone support the Citizen United ruling? Does anyone support a system where HP CEO Mark Hurd can work for the company for a year, run it into the ground, get fired after expense-account irregularities are discovered, and still walk away with an $11,000,000 dollar pay out? We need to make some changes.
One look at how much money Wall Street put into getting Obama elected and is putting into getting him re-elected should quiet the comments about communists and what not.
Actually, the HP/Hurd thing is perfectly okay with me – not because I agree with the action, but because it’s HP giving its own money to one of its (now ex-) employees. Not a single dime of mine went to that.
Of course, a lot of shareholder money went into that, so if anyone is going to get pissed over it, they would have first dibs.
It’s funny how easily Americans are divided these days. Most of the armchair warriors commenting here whine and complain about the system yet do nothing to protest it. When The TeaParty protest, the Left call them idiot rednecks. When OWS protest, the Right call them commie hippies. Only a fool still believes that there is any difference between our gov and our largest financial institutions. The corporations have all been bought with bailouts just like our elected officials have been bought with campaign contributions from the same corporations. Do yourself a favor and turn off CNN and Foxnews. Go to a website from someone who has been there in person. Don’t let the MSM divide and conquer tell you what to think about your fellow Americans.
Well, these responses were all over the map – from the deeply paranoid & comspiratorial to political ranting & all points between.
Greed is as old as civilized man & is never going away. There will always be the haves, have nots, wanna be’s & complainers. The opportunity to make money & lots of it is available to everybody in this country.
Some bitch & complain about the imigrant who came here with 12 cents in his/her pocket & became a success. They worked through extreme adversity & deeply disadvantaged because of unfamiliarity of the culture & or language and did it.
How arrogant can we possibly be to mock someone like this? All they are doing is exercising the freedoms we have here in America.
The Hollywood rich & famous is a perfect example. Most everybody you can think of in this industry started with zero, worked very hard, knocked on a zillion doors, used a little smarts & surprise – they become the envy of many. So to those who jealously moan & groan about it, have nothing better or more productive to do & that’s dispacable.
These protests are pretty stupid if you ask me. They are trying to apply an extremely short term event (protest) as a solution to a very long term problem. The captains of industry & political leaders keeping moving forward & going about business as usual, watching & waiting for the gas to run out on these dopey lemmings. If there is any residual mess, they WILL add insult to injury & use tax money to clean the mess.
Get this point clearly –
THIS GAME IS RIGGED & NO AMOUNT OF SHORT TERM PROTESTING WILL STOP IT -EVER.
Vote in the Tea Party, Ron Paul or whomever, it’s not going to stop it. Burn buildings down, kidnap a politician or 10, the beat goes on. Attack Afghanstan, Iraq, Korea, Tibet or Mexico, the problem keeps growing.
Americans have been lulled to sleep & to the present point of mediocre, lazy thinking over the past 60 years & will do nothing about the current situation, N-O-T-H-I-N-G. Why? Because the soution is too damn hard – it requires hard & real work combined with a truly strong, collective & long term effort.
As long as we have our plasma TV, Internet access & Visa card, there is no compelling reason to leave our vicarious world of living like mushrooms in fear.
So instead of pointing fingers & whining or waiting for the Chicken Little prophecy to never come to fruition, speak, do & be productive & solution oriented because any change starts with you, nobody else.
Why do people admire the Steve Jobs of the world? He & they stand for what they believe in & are primarily right with their intent while caring very little about mainstream thinking or opinion. The funny thing is, eventually these people create the mainstream thinking – get it??
Be a mushroom or a innovator, the choice is yours & trust me everybody will accept you as a mushroom but will admire you for being an innovator or leader.
“They are trying to apply an extremely short term event (protest) as a solution to a very long term problem. ”
Yes, if the protests are all there is. But, if people use the protests for a launching pad of something long term then no. I’m hoping the protests are an launching pad, but I’m becoming doubtful that they will.
You are right but it takes strong, non-political leadership who can lead without being an idiot. Also, it needs long term, persistent strategy.
Idiot example – Al Sharpton
Non-idiot example – ML King
Question:
If the whole control over the masses is all being orchestrated, then the one thing missing is… buy who(m)?
I mean, is it the Alex Jones type Bilderberger family thing, a conglomeration of families a’la the Illuminati, or perhaps a widespread organization that has coalesced into a corporation or two, a’la Goldman Sachs? Or perhaps it is some sort of group that no one has heard of?
I’ve heard all of these and combinations thereof, but nothing concrete (and honestly have a hard time believing it), and most of it is contradictory after a bit of digging.
I ask the following because I am genuinely curious.
IMHO, if there is this central committee of sorts rigging the system (there’s a reason I used that term), then it’s bound and doomed to fail, causing a mess that no one will be able to crawl out of. Global economics is far too complex and unpredictable to control by some small group. This has been tried numerous times, and the result usually ends up being bread lines, deprivation, and eventual aid from other economies. There is no indication that any improvements in this field have happened.
Even China (often held up as an example) has only managed to thrive by backing off the whole central-planning thing and introducing (wait for it…) capitalistic ideals into their structure.
So I’m asking… who is, in your opinion, rigging the game, and what do you think will be the end result?
Your comment is awaiting moderation.

My dad once told me the Golden Rule in business – those that have the gold, make the rules. Read – The Creature From Jekyll Island, it will give you some background how things work, it is well documented.
Do I know the cast of players of this agenda? Just like the marionette does not know who operates the strings, we move accordingly not knowing where we’ll end up. Creating uncertainty & distraction is the ally to gaining headway of those of whom control the strings.
I intentionally used the analogy of mushroom because we are kept in the dark, fed sh*t and accept it because we have NO choice. We all look in the wrong direction all of the time trying to figure out next moves & are wrong the vast majority of the time. Even when we are right, it makes little difference because we are not in a position to control anything.
People like to use historical examples like the fall of Rome as reasoning for why this idea cannot sustain today. The big, game changing difference today is the world is inter-connected with an instant (real time) information gathering & delivery source – two very significant points.
Trends which took months to take hold can now happen in just a few weeks i.e. Occupy Wall Street. You see, this single source (Internet) never existed before therefore, applying historical events or models can’t be done with any measure of accuracy because of this variable. The Internet & the advancements of technology is the allegorical devil if you ask me and it WILL control our lives.
The end result? This economic storm will pass without too much upheaval, certainly not to the liking of MD Creekmore where we will don the cammo flack jackets, load up the bazooka’s & start killing anything that walks on our property.
It’s blind fools like him who lacks any education or any critical thinking skills & yet thinks he supposes the end of the world because of a spinning debt clock. He posts a “must see” videos from prophets like Michael Ruppert with predictions of the economic world positively ending 2 months ago …. oops. Michael Ruppert is a man that is certifiable & needs a rubber room with Vivaldi playing full time.
However, Creekmore is absolutely clueless – he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know – how sad to be so out of touch with the present. What is worse is he has followers whom all want so desperately to believe their pain has a culprit, someone to blame. They sit and wait for the sky to fall & wait & wait & wait …
The end result won’t be felt for 20-40 years at best in my opinion. The economic stuff of today will start turning around in 2014 and we will be back to being sheep but much more fiscally conscious as individuals. Trust will continue to erode but it will become the norm. As I stated above, we are continuously being numbed & dumbed down and will be like sheep – give us food & toys and a little drama & we’ll be content. I maintain that there is no profit in an economic collapse or significant agenda gain (corner the world wealth)or it would have done so by now.
Here is a couple of movie clips from Bulworth, which I contend is one of the most brilliant pieces of comedy writing mocking our political system, yet speaks truth in my opinion.

Amen. The banks are greedy, but they didn’t force anyone into debt. I have student loans myself – in hindsight a mistake sine I now work as a freelance writer so I really didn’t need one. But I’m not looking to blame anyone else for my mistakes.
“Most preppers understand how valuable it is to live within your means and have taken steps to cut debt and get ahead on supplies that will help them stay above water when the trouble starts. I hope that if you aren’t out of debt that you’re working on it and I wish you success in your endeavor.”
I hope that’s the case, Jarhead, but I’m not quite confident about it. I remember buying a house before the bubble burst. We took out a loan and the loan originator was trying every way in the world to entice us to buy more house and that debt was a good thing. He was almost condescending when I told him that it may make sense on paper but it went against my own comfort level.
So, the banks may not have forced people into making bad decisions but they can certainly influence those people who don’t think for themselves and who go with the flow.

Considering OWS has been endorsed by outstanding organizations and individuals like the American Communist Party, American Nazi Party, CAIR, David Duke, Michael Moore, The Working Families Party, Code Pink, George Soros, et. al I wonder WTF!?!?!?! a former Marine is doing promoting this GARBAGE!!!! As for the rest of the SMs who buy into this…I’m sorry brothers but you are being played.
Are there people on Wall Street that should be prosecuted? Yup. There are also people in Washington that should be prosecuted! Wake up and stop being “Useful Idiots” (Lenin would be so proud).
Funny how none of us knows the names of the billionaires on the OTHER side, sitting up high on Wall Street, looking out the windows at the stupid honest poor people, clinking their champagne glasses & laughing …
The last laugh comes later because they can’t take it with them.
They stop laughing when revolutions begin. Ask Louis the XVI , Nicholas II , etc .
