The SHTF homie that gave me a copy of his wholesale price list of Mountain House foods said he spoke with them, and this is what he said:
We won’t be carrying MTN HOUSE goods anymore. They haven’t even gotten they’re first shipment from them! I’ve heard that the govt has been buying all that they can get their hands on? Do they know something we oughta?
I’ve heard the rumor on the government buying up Mountain House foods a few times. I have no idea whether it’s fact or fiction, or if it’s fact, what the reason might be. In any case, dude didn’t get his order.
Seriously though, as the world descends into most certain chaos and survival samurais determine the best method to stash some grub, you know what the most cost effective method it, and it isn’t Mountain House #10 cans. It’s food grade buckets, mylar bags, oxygen absorbers, bulk grains, legumes, and such.
This approach is far more economical.
I called all around God’s creation (bakeries, large kitchens, etc.) looking for used food grade buckets they didn’t want, and I couldn’t find any. Annoyingly, I had to pay for them.
If you do get into storing bulk grains and such, you’ll eventually want a Country Living Grain Mill. They’re freaking awesome. I wish I had one, but it’s not in the budget at this time.

Chris, the $4.29 price doesn’t include a lid or shipping with uline. I entered an order for five 5-gallon buckets with lids on each site. With shipping it was $50.15 with uline: $5.95 for 5 lids, $21.45 for 5 buckets, and $22.75 for shipping.
Emergency Essentials for 5 buckets with lids was $45.75 with shipping. Then I entered the “newstarget” coupon code and the total price dropped to $37.50 – delivered!
The biggest downside is that they plaster their buckets with “emergency essentials” advertising, but whatever.

Even cheaper buckets. Although, they don’t carry gamma seal lids. Just the single use type. But for $4.29 per 5 gallon bucket. Its hard to beat.
I have made three seperate orders from Emergency Esentials (each a bucket and gamma seal). Each of my orders arrived in a timely maner. I recomend them. (not affiliated with them).
PS. The google the “promo code” idea is great. I will remember that.
Arrgg, there are no decent places to buy long life food/storage buckets/mylar bags or ANYTHING in this country.
You need to move to the US if you want to prepare properly for anything
I’ve never had to pay for a bucket. Mind you, I still travel between suburb and retreat. But the grocery stores in my area all have bakeries in them, and they all are happy to give me used frosting buckets. The 2 gallon, 3.5 gallon, and 5 gallon ones all come with lids with great gaskets. The 4 gallon ones don’t, but are great for non-food/ammo items.

I’d like to add that if you don’t mind ugly orange, Home Depot has just reduced their prices on Homer Buckets ($2.78 each) and lids ($.98 each).
Not pretty, but perfectly functional…and don’t need to be scraped out or worry about stinky pickle smell, etc.
bbkaren, Home Depots bucket are paint buckets, not food grade buckets. I’m not sure you’d want to store your grub in such a pail.

The Home Depot buckets would be fine for keeping already-packaged foods safe from mice (and possibly meal moths, although those suckers get into just about everything).
I’m lucky to know a cake decorator who is more than happy to give me her left-over buckets. And I don’t mind the frosting smell!
I get my buckets from the local convenience store, only summertime as these are ice-cream buckets. For free but you gotta get the ice-cream smell out with bleach, etc
I’m not sure how the whole “food grade” thing works but they’re “HDPE2” just like the others I’ve seen. Just uglier.
Besides, I don’t know anyone who stores food loose in a bucket; most folks use a bag of some sort. I think the bucket is just a secondary defense; against mice, etc.
I have also purchased from Emergency Essentials and Highly recommend them.
I have found the Deli buckets that Fern Refers to, free at my local grocery store. They are food grade but don’t have rubber lid seals, They are labeled in pounds, like 35 pound of coleslaw.
I use them with mylar bags, bayleaves, O2 absorbers and seal them up with a clothes iron and stick. I think this works fine so long as you use the proper mylar liner and seal them well.
I have also found a local source for dry ice. I am gathering the deli buckets and planning a big sealing event the dry ice. A one person ( maybe 2 with the wife) prep party..lol
http://www.affordablebuckets.com has some deals when buying bulk buckets
Another great food storage company that sells #10 cans of food is http://www.shelfreliance.com If you use code Save15 you will save an extra 15% at checkout. The Thrive line of food is REALLY good stuff.
A total of $3.76 for both a bucket & lid, that I can drive to home depot and pick up (no waiting, no minimum purchase, no shipping charges), is the best deal I’ve found–
I used to buy from Uline but they were far more expensive; and I doubt any more “certified food grade” than the home depot buckets…
Clean the frosting buckets by setting them over an ant hill open side down. Bleach and water for pickle smells and leave out in the sun for a week or 2.
HDPE2 – That’s a food grade container stamping, right?
p.s. If you’re looking for gamma lids, sportsmansguide.com has them for 6.97 (less if you’re a guide club member)…
Ranger Man – Very good advice on switching to the buckets.
While I have a few cases of Mt House cans for long term storage I switched over to buckets a year ago due to the cost and the taste of freeze dried foods. I can’t see living off that stuff for very long.
I am glad I did. It’s been a lot cheaper and more tasty to put up my own. I have had very good luck getting 3.5 gal and 5 gal icing buckets with lids that have rubber seal rings from doughnut shops and grocery stores that have in house bakeries at no cost.
I found its best to ask in person. I have gone to the same store one day and been told no and the very next day I speak to someone else and score 3 buckets with lids. All I can say is keep trying as there is no need to pay for buckets or good lids.
I also use Mylar bags and O2 absorbers to store the food for long term use. The only exception being sugar and salt which I store directly in the buckets.
I buy the bags and O2 absorbers from Walton Feeds. There may cheaper sources.
I have also found that the best prices on bulk wheat, rice and beans to be at my local cut rate grocery store. Any store that sells bulk items in bins should be able to order you the same product in 25 or 50 lb bags. Usually that is how they receive it and they just dump it in the bins. I just drop off a list each time I visit and they call me when it comes in with their normal shipment. Usually takes two -three days.
Two added benefits for going local: I can try the product first before I buy and there are no shipping charges.
PS: Build a relationship with the supervisor for that section. It will pay off. Mine lets me know when price increases are coming up and when there was a run on rice earlier this year he kept several bags for me in the back because I was a regular customer.
It takes me about 10 min to put the Mylar bag in the bucket, pour in the product and toss in several O2 absorbers then seal the bag with an iron. Well worth the time. Over the last year I have managed to stockpile over 600 lbs of grains and 200 lbs of assorted beans this way.
Keep up the good work,
Regards Wayne

FOR ANYONE LOOKING TO BUY A MORE AFFORDABLE FOOD STORAGE THAT IS NOT IN NUMBER TEN CANS BUT INSTEAD IN MYLAR BAGS THEN IN BUCKETS, CHECK OUT THIS NEW COMPANY!!!! (WISECOMPANYUS.COM ) MUCH BETTER THAN MOUNTAIN HOUSE!!!!! and 1/3 of the cost!!!!!
im getting ready to begin storing food goods. it seens that bucket stored is the cheapest and best way to go. how long will this method keep my goods …and what is this O2 bag stuff?
I don’t know how much time you spent on your research, but while Emergency Essentials is excellent for many items, they are most certainly NOT the cheapest place to get 6 gallon food grade buckets for food storage. Theirs are over $8….I get mine for $5.99!
If you google and look a bit further, you will find them for even less with a bulk order (over 35.) Just thought you’d want to know.
