So You Want a Garden in the Spring

Tis the season…. for seed catalogs! Yes, they are finding their way into the hands of new gardeners, and every year I get questions about the best way to get a garden going in the spring.  First, prep your garden area. Do you still have leaves laying around? Pile those where you want to break ground in the spring. They will help kill off the grass/weeds that are growing there now.  Other things you can pile on now include grass clippings, compost and, believe it or not, snow. Yup, if…

Community Gardening

No Culture has ever survived if it couldn’t feed itself.  The strongest communities are the ones that feed themselves. That is historical normalcy. Let’s rebuild it.  -Joel Salatin from his newest book “Folks, This Ain’t Normal” There’s a lot about the American food system that isn’t normal. We ship things too far. We grow vegetables for their shipping ability instead of their flavor or texture.  We fly/truck/sail in produce from all over the world, because we can’t even be bothered to grow all our own food.  We’d rather cross a…

Finding Abandoned Gardens

While I was writing my garden plans, I got to thinking about how much work goes into a garden every year.  How much of that would remain if the gardener died/left/whatever?  If you were traveling through an abandoned area or foraging for food, could you find old gardens? Looking for surviving remains of gardens seems a bit more likely to succeed than foraging through prairie grass for a handful of herbs. What would you be likely to find though? Things to look for – What could conceivably survive after the…

Square Foot Gardening – End Of Season Update

It is past the end of the growing season here in Maine and the Square Foot Garden I planted on May 7 is done for the year.  Unlike Calamity Jane I didn’t plant a fall garden this year, but I will say I was happy with the SFG this summer. As a brief recap SFG is a raised bed garden system of 4’ x 4’ garden beds and laid out in a grid pattern with the vegetables growing in each square foot of garden.  The initial investment in this garden…

Havahart Trap Delivers Survival Skunk Food

Regular readers of this site may remember my garden woes last year and the garden devouring groundhog story. The thing wiped out like 75% of the garden in 2 days. No real surprise, but they’re baaa-aaaaack. These things would be a TEOTWAWKI nightmare – DESTROYING your survival garden, leaving you …. foodless! There’s are a few extensive groundhog holes in the woods behind the house. Will new groundhogs occupy an abandoned den? I kill one and they come back. In any case, I wasn’t impressed to see one this year.…

Growing Vertical Veggies

This post is the second entry into Safecastle’s Freedom Awards writing competition. There are great prizes to be had, so check that link out and send us your entry. ************* Hey folks, This is gat31 here and Rangerman has been kind enough to let me write an article in response to those of us who would like to have a garden, but don’t really have the space. So I have been looking into alternative gardening methods to help us all out. I’m going to give you a few methods I…

Is It Too Early to Think About Gardening?

In the past week I got out the copy of Square Foot Gardening I bought late last fall, dusted it off, opened it up and started reading.  I don’t know if anybody has ever read this book before, but the guy really makes a case for his SFG technique.  I’ve decided to put in a couple of these  4’ x 4’ gardens this summer and I’m looking forward to getting started.    Maybe it’s because I’m getting older, but I remember as a kid being put to work in my parent’s…

Keeping the Damn Deer Out of a Survival Garden

I didn’t think for a minute a 6′ fence would keep deer out by itself. I researched how to keep deer out of your garden before the ground was even turned over. I knew they’d be an issue. Deer proofing advice largely included: get a dog buy a bunch of Deer Off to spray build an 8′ fence build an electric fence go to a hairdresser for bags of human hair to spread everywhere spread blood meal around hang bars of soap around Everybody had a different solution, but for…
