On the morning Trump won, network pundits stared blankly at their producers. ‘How did this happen’, they asked as they struggled to reconcile the results of the election with their flawed polling data. Slowly journalists developed a narrative to explain their loss: Middle-America is racist, ignorant, and misogynistic. The plebeians of the country can’t be counted on to vote for a qualified female candidate like Hillary Clinton. That was it, right? The sheer idiocy of people like you and me was so awesome it confounded the excellence of political projections. After all, Nate Silver, the left’s anointed polling expert, can’t be wrong. Pundits ended November 9th with a comforting consensus: they were right but constituent stupidity transcended rational projecting.

In reality, the left has insulated themselves inside an impenetrable echo chamber. With the combined power of the mainstream media and internet social justice warriors, half of the country deluded themselves into thinking average people bought into their precepts of socialism, political correctness, and globalization. The left actively divorced themselves from Middle-America by refusing to entertain beliefs antithetical to their own. Rather than entertain the merits of proposed policy objectives, the left viewed issues through the lens of identity politics and bias.
Ideology Has Surpassed Logic
Do you have objections to Syrian Refugees arriving to the United States en masse? If yes, according to CNN and others, you are a racist. They don’t want to consider that the refugee experiment in Western Europe has ended tragically. That would require an actual refutation of an argument. Nope, you’re a racist. The nuances of your argument can go to hell. In the 21st Century paradigm of leftist debate, ideology surpasses logic.

This line of thinking, that feelings are more important than logic, is subversive to the Marketplace of Ideas outlined by James Madison in Federalist Papers 10 and 51. The refusal of some on the left to engage in critical debate is inherently un-American. What’s made us strong and competitive as a country is the free and diverse wealth of ideas and speech. Progressives jeopardize this strength with contrived moral outrage and civic hideousness.
We Need Federalist 10
Censorship, book-burnings, and state run media are viewed appropriately as the constructs of barbaric, repressive regimes. In fact, James Madison foresaw the emergence of repressive morons like Rachel Maddow. In Federalist No 10 Madison sagaciously writes: “Theoretic politicians, who have patronized this species of government, have erroneously supposed that by reducing mankind to a perfect equality in their political rights, they would, at the same time, be perfectly equalized and assimilated in their possessions, their opinions, and their passions.” Imagine that, people have different ideas about different things. Guess what? This diversity of ideas makes us stronger. As good citizens, we must be willing to engage with those who do not agree with us.
If journalists had paid attention in their civics 1000 class, this election wouldn’t be surprising. Furthermore, had they even skimmed James Madison, the pundits on network television would be able to have adult conversations about adult things. Quite frankly, I don’t care what beliefs you hold. As an American, you’re entitled to believe whatever you want to believe. You should however, be prepared to subject your ideas to scrutiny. Retreating to character assassination, ad hominems, and red herrings is an infantile way to confront opposition.
Top journalists in this country, people who are supposed to be arbiters of objective information, perform mental gymnastics to sell their biases as news. Some, most notably Wolf Blitzer and Donna Brazille, are guilty of colluding with a Presidential Candidate in order to further their agendas. This isn’t journalism; it’s lobbying. The best journalist in the entire election cycle was Julian Assange. Stomach that for a second; one of the only people willing to tell the American People the truth is a wanted fugitive hiding in an Ecuadorian Embassy. Elites in our society no longer seem to value the dissemination of impartial information. The failures of these top journalists are a microcosm of the same insidious behavior seen in the general electorate. People who meet differing beliefs with willful ignorance are disgraceful.
The message here, to celebrate a free marketplace of ideas, is applicable to the left and right. While this message is most germane to those on the left, some on the right are also guilty of engaging in despicable rhetorical gimmicks. As evidenced by the results of this election, the left must seriously re-evaluate the merits of their policy proposals. As of now, they have refused to do this. Until they can do so, their ideas will continue to atrophy. We are witnesses to ignorance accelerated by unhinged political correctness.
