Ranger Man’s original I Am Legend Movie Review did not include rifle specifics, but since you asked . . . it’s an M4 with a 16″ barrel, Trijicon scope, collapsible stock, quad rail, and light. That’s the story, end of post.
What?
You want more?
Fair enough.
I employed the assistance of my SHTF homeboy “Hokie” who posts over at AR15.com. He’s the go-to-guy for specifics on the AR-15 family. He dug into movie photos for a complete analysis. This is his take:
It’s a little Hollywood mixed with reality (go figure)
16″ M4 with carbine gas system
Trijicon TA31 ACOG with a Soviet IOR reticule found on Dragonov Sniper Rifles (um . . . ooo-kay!)
Standard 6-position USGI telestock with the end squared off
YHM Railed Handguard with CAA Rail Covers
Pentagon Light / Laser Combo
Everything else is standard.
Word.

This is the view through the optic:
*if he was in true survival mode he would’ve shot the deer in the ass*
Note the muzzle flash in this pic, an example of Hollywood flare. This rifle would not produce this flash.
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post when we’ll go online window shopping to build a clone. Prepare your wallet.

I know I only saw the movie once, but if I’m not mistaken he used multiple AR rifles through out the movie. The one you have pictured is the one he used the most, but in his apartment he had multiple AR’s all over, i.e., in the his umbrella rack. Also, at the very end when he is firing up at ceiling I could have sworn I saw a heavy barreled AR in his hand. This would explain the full auto. I still don’t understand the full auto, unless it was just Hollywood doing It’s thing. Or, they could have did what I would have done which is change out the lower receiver and bolt to my liking after the ish hit the fan. No BATF to tell you what you can or cannot do when the world as we know it is gone. “But remember people, full auto is fun and looks cool, but it is not all that it’s cracked up to be. All you really get is a waste of ammo and a lot of misses which you most definitely do not want. In the words of Wyatt Earp, “take your time in a hurry.” Put that sucker on select fire or three round burst at the most and select your targets.
Yeah the muzzle blast looks a little extreme!!!
Cool write up. I’m definately interested in a clone. If it’s good enough for the Fresh Prince of Bel Air…it’s good enough for ol’ Bob Afrito!
I am not at all disagreeing with your analysis but I think it was supposed to be a SOF MOD M4 which would explain the full auto. Remember he was supposed to be a soldier. That (even without the auto sear) is going to be a really expensive toy but a heck of a fun one.
The optic is wrong. The scope is an ACOG, the reticle pattern is off a SVD’s scope.
Do you think the rail covers are actually Bushmaster Sure Grip rail covers? http://www.bushmaster.com/catalog_parts_handguards.asp (scroll to bottom)
Kev, it’s possible. Difficult to tell exactly from the pics.
its shown dat every1 out there got infected by the virus over the city newyork.then how come all deers n lions eatin dem were so hairy n in so normal health?///even they dint bother 2 attack on will smith az the normal beast would hav done!
If you are looking for blog ideas…
I watched Cloverfield this weekend. It had allot of SHTF elements in it. You could tie in the necessity of a bugout plan.
[…] gear ← What Rifle was Used in “I Am Legend”? Current Events Dictate ANOTHER “SHTF News Update” […]
The rifle was a military M4. Smith was an army officer. That why he had a select fire, but this does not exclude the problem of the fact that the army still uses the 3round burst mode. Colt only sell the M16/M4 in South America(License issue) that has Semi, Full Auto and 3round burst selector together.
It’s more than feasible to assume that while there were humans immune to the virus there would also be other species immune…
Also, I believe the rail covers are the TDI Arms short rail covers…
The carbine used by Smith in the pics above is not an M4, it’s a Colt LE6920 semi-automatic carbine with the barrel cut down to 14.5″ and modified to fire fully-automatic. Rail covers are ERGO rail covers, the tac light is a Pentagon MD3R, and the optic is a TA31 series ACOG.
